Scottish Highlands bird-watching

The Scottish Highlands is a stunning natural area, perfect for spotting a variety of bird species. With rugged landscapes, remote glens and expansive lochs, it’s a rich habitat. Home to everything from the iconic golden eagle to the wee dipper bird. Seasonal changes bring different opportunities. You might spot ospreys fishing in the summer and wintering geese in the colder months. So bring along a good pair of binoculars and get ready for an amazing bird-watching holiday in the Highlands. Check out our bird-watching guide for a list of some of the birds you might see and where to find them.

Animals to spot in the Highlands

There are many other creatures in the Highlands, which you’ll find in the woodlands, mountains, heaths, lochs and rivers. There are red deer and stags in the forests, elusive pine martens in the woods and hillsides, and even bottlenose dolphins out at sea. The endangered red squirrel also thrives in some parts of Scotland. See our wildlife safari blog for more detail on spotting these amazing animals in the wild.

Plants, trees and flowers

Our spectacular Highland landscapes feature all kinds of plants and trees. You can enjoy nature walks and trails in amazing local places, like the Ness Islands, Glen Affric and the Caledonian Canal. Enjoy the variety of treelife, looking out for Douglas firs, Scots pines, rowan, oak, hazel and sycamore. You’ll also find lots of wild plants and flowers, depending on the time of year. They may include Scottish thistles, primroses, bluebells and colourful carpets of heather.
