Eloping to Scotland

What does elope actually mean?

A great idea for small weddings . . . and not to mention romantic! And if you elope to Scotland, you are guaranteed a day to remember.

Eloping used to mean young couples, whose families didn’t approve, sneaking off to get married so no one could stop them. These days, there are different reasons to elope. It’s still an option for those who want the thrill of a secret wedding. But, also a great idea for those who just want a smaller one and Scotland is a fabulous place to elope to.

What could be more romantic than stealing away with your loved one to get married? Just the two of you (plus a couple of witnesses and the celebrant), exchanging your vows in an intimate ceremony.

Eloping to Scotland

Now, when you talk about eloping, Gretna Green in Scotland springs to mind. Couples have been running away to get married there since 1710! Over the centuries, Scotland has become a favourite elopement destination. And not just Gretna Green. Here in the rugged, romantic setting of the Scottish Highlands, we welcome many eloping couples.

Traditionally, eloping meant just the two of you disappearing off and not telling anyone. But, it doesn’t have to be a secret. You can tell people you are eloping and have a party when you get back. Or you may choose to have a small meal with close family and friends to celebrate when you return. You could take a handful of family and friends with you.

Marriage in Scotland – the rules

However you decide to elope to Scotland, the choice is indeed yours. But, there are some rules and regulations you need to consider. The Scottish Government website provides the information you’ll need, whether you are from the UK or another country. You’ll find further details here on the National Records of Scotland website. This includes who is eligible to get married, the different types of wedding ceremony, and all the forms and paperwork you’ll need to provide and complete. Be sure to allow plenty of time to do this, at least three months.
