History of the castle

Eilean Donan Castle is one of the most iconic images of Scotland, dating back to the middle of the 13th century. It was the first fortified castle that guarded the lands of Kintail and has since then gone through four different phases of build. This is due to the feudal history of Scotland throughout the ages and as such, it was built and rebuilt adding an intriguing history to the place.

The ruins of the castle lay untouched for about 200 years after it was destroyed in a Jacobite uprising in 1719. In 1911, Lieutenant Colonel John MacRae-Gilstrap bought the island and decided to restore the castle to its former glory. Thanks to the new owner and 20 years of hard work and labour, the castle was re-opened. Moreover, the MacRae family are still the Constables of Eilean Donan Castle today. Luckily for us, the Eilean Donan Castle still stands and we can witness its beauty first-hand!
