A fun family adventure on the Ness Islands Railway

Are you looking for a fun family day out in Inverness? Then why not head to Whin Park, just beside the Ness Islands, and enjoy a fun ride on the Ness Islands Railway. This fun 7 ¼ inch gauge Ness Islands Railway was built in 1983 and sees you travelling half a mile round the picturesque Whin Park in Inverness. Interestingly, this miniature railway is the most northerly miniature railway in the United Kingdom.

About this miniature train ride

So what about the locomotives? Well, there is ‘Chrissie’ and ‘Uncle Frank’ who currently work on this railway. And ‘Chrissie’ reintroduced steam back onto this railway in 2012! Once you are aboard and comfortably seated you will be taken for a fun ride around the park. Here you will wind around repeating loops, cuttings and even over bridges! And one of these bridges is over 140 feet long!

Opening Times:

If you want to take a ride the railway is usually open from Easter through to October at weekends. And it is open daily during the school holidays.

During term times they are only open at weekends from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. During the school holidays, they are open every day from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. All trains are Weather Permitting. Check their Facebook page for daily updates on opening.

Rides are £2.50 each and Under 4’s travel free.

Additionally, this fabulous little railway is owned by Highland Hospice. And all surplus funds go towards supporting the delivery of hospice services across the Highlands. So not only do you get to have an amazing and fun day out with the family you are supporting a good cause. A rideable miniature railway offering more than just fun.
