Why visit Inverness?

Since becoming Scotland’s newest city in 2000, Inverness has grown to become a hugely popular tourist destination. As such it has all the amenities, sights and things to do you would expect from any city. Of course, we have the added advantage of having a monster staying in our nearby loch!

Even although the nights are long and the days short at this time of year, there’s still plenty of opportunities to get outside and make the most of our beautiful countryside. A popular walk for tourists and residents alike in Inverness is to stroll along the Ness Islands. This is a scenic walk along the River Ness, taking in historic landmarks like Inverness Castle and Inverness Cathedral. It’s a wonderful walk for a fresh winter’s morning to blow away those cobwebs.

Things to do in Inverness in February

There are loads of activities to keep you entertained in winter time in Inverness. As a thriving city, we have plenty of things you can do with kids. The Inverness Museum and Art Gallery, for example, offers year-round entertainment. Start by travelling back in time to how the Highlands were formed, taking millions of years and plenty of volcanoes to form what we see today. Learn about the people and places of the area, and maybe even learn a few Gaelic words!

It may be too cold in February to go swimming in the sea, but the indoor Inverness Aquadome Leisure Waters pool features a massive wave pool with water geysers. It’s a great excuse to get active and splash about! If you are coming with young children, the pool has an area dedicated purely for babies, toddlers and small children.

If you like being outdoors during the night, then Inverness has one special gift up her sleeve. One of the most beautiful and majestic sights to see in the northern hemisphere is the Northern Lights. Called the “Mirrie Dancers” up here, once you see them you’ll never forget them. Stunning colours shoot across the sky, creating an etherial landscape high above all the buildings and hills. Truly, a sight to behold on your Inverness holiday.
