Without a doubt, it is one of the most popular and important castles of the Scottish Highlands.

But you can rest assured, the beauty of this epic castle doesn’t stop on the outside. Step inside and explore its fabulous rooms. Explore period furniture, a fantastic collection of artefacts, a display of weapons, art and so much more! It makes for a great family attraction as Eileen Donan Castle offers a lot of fun for the kids. Here they can see ancient battlements, spy holes and the surrounding wildlife. And if you get hungry on your way, you can grab a refreshment and a panini in their coffee shop.

History of the castle

Eileen Donan Castle is one of the most iconic images of Scotland, dating back to the middle of the 13th century. It was the first fortified castle that guarded over the lands of Kintail and has since then gone through four different phases of build. This is due to the feudal history of Scotland throughout the ages and as such, it was built and re-built adding an intriguing history to the place.

The ruins of the castle laid untouched for about 200 years after it was destroyed in a Jacobite uprising in 1719. In 1911, Lieutenant Colonel John MacRae-Gilstrap bought the island and decided to restore the castle to its former glory. Thanks to the new owner and the 20 years of hard work and labour, the castle was re-opened. Moreover, the MacRae family are still the Constables of Eilean Donan Castle today. Luckily for us, the Eileen Donan Castle still stands and we can witness its beauty first hand!
