On Location: Inverness on the Small Screen
Our Favourite TV Shows set in Inverness
With our beautiful scenery and enchanting villages, the Scottish Highlands has seen its fair share of big screen productions. Braveheart, Macbeth and Disney’s Brave have all shared the spotlight with the Highlands. And the magical Glenfinnan Viaduct will forever be known as the path the Hogwarts Express travelled to everyone’s favourite school of witchcraft and wizardry. But the Highlands is a magnet for the small screen too. Which is why we’ve decided to share some of our favourite TV shows set in and around Inverness.
The Loch: A Monster New Murder Mystery
Where better to set a gripping series about a sadistic serial killer than right here in the Scottish Highlands? On a famous body of water that has long been shrouded in myth and mystery! The Loch is a brand new murder mystery set on the sleepy shores of Loch Ness. Beautiful Fort Augustus is transformed into the fictional town of Lochnefoy, where small-town detective Annie Redford tries to catch a ruthless killer.
But despite its macabre subject matter and nail biting twists and turns, The Loch is a treat for anyone who loves the beauty of the Scottish Highlands. From Carn Mohr Mountain and Fort William, to the breath-taking Glen Coe. Scenes of wild countryside have been picked from the most spectacular locations our wee corner of the world has to offer. It’s why we’re loving The Loch. With its small town charm, stunning scenery, a mysterious murderer and a few cliff-hangers to boot, what’s not to love?
Outlander: Step Back in Time
Who can resist the sight of Jamie Fraser in a kilt with the beautiful Highland glens in the background? Or a complex time-travelling love triangle set amongst famous historical Highland events? There are so many Outlander film and book locations on our doorstep. So it comes as no surprise that fans are heading to Inverness to relive the magic of the series.
As anyone who has read the books or watched the series knows, Inverness is where the Outlander adventure begins. It’s here that Claire and Frank celebrate their second honeymoon. Before an ill-timed nap at the site of some ancient standing stones (thanks to nearby Clava Cairns for the time-travelling inspiration) whisks her back in time to a war-torn Scotland. Setting in motion a series of fantastical events. From Clava Cairns and Urquhart Castle to Beauly Priory and the Culloden Battlefield, there is no end to the wonderful Outlander locations to see in and around Inverness.
The Grand Tour: Taking The Small Screen Up A Gear
Murder mysteries and historically-inspired dramas aren’t the only programmes of late to star the beautiful Scottish Highlands. Everybody’s favourite motor-head trio, Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond, made Loch Ness one of their first ports of call in the first season of their new car-loving show, The Grand Tour. Once again Loch Ness, with its beautiful scenery and mysterious beastie, proves to be the perfect backdrop as the trio wreak havoc in the Highlands.
