Inverness local towns and villages

There are many lovely villages and small towns, which make great places to visit during your stay at the Kingsmills Hotel in Inverness. Here are just a few of the highlights…

Loch Ness villages

The little village of Dores on the shores of Loch Ness is just a short drive from our hotel. The main attraction in Dores is the beautiful stretch of beach with stunning views out across the loch. The views are so great, it has become the main base for Steve Feltham – full-time Nessie Hunter! There is also a lovely village pub, The Dores Inn, located on the lochside.

Drumnadrochit is another wonderful Loch Ness village, widely associated with Nessie. Visit the local museum, Loch Ness Centre, to discover the story of the legendary Loch Ness Monster. Then, explore Urquhart Castle, a romantic castle ruin overlooking the famous loch. You can even get out on the water with Loch Ness Cruises.

Northwest of Inverness

Near the western end of the Black Isle lies the village, Muir of Ord. Known for its whisky distillery, The Singleton of Glen Ord Distillery. The newly refurbished visitor centre here offers distillery tours, tasting experiences and a bar, deli and shop. The village also boasts a popular 18-hole golf course at Muir of Ord Golf Club, designed in part by the renowned architect James Braid.

To the northwest of Inverness, Strathpeffer is a lovely village to visit, around a half-hour drive from our hotel. In the 19th century, it was a popular spa resort. The Victorian pump room in the middle of the village dates from 1819. Here, visitors would drink its sulphurous waters, thought to have healing qualities. You can still do so today! You can also visit the charming Highland Museum of Childhood, located within the old railway station.

Beauly, which means “beautiful place”, truly does live up to its name. Experience the charm and beauty of this picturesque Highland village, located on the River Beauly. The magnificent ruins of Beauly Priory, dating from around 1230, dominate the village centre. There are plenty of shops, cafes and bars here, and lots of lovely local walks.

Seaside and coastal

Nairn is around a 30-minute drive from Inverness, or a short train journey. This lovely seaside town has three beaches, great for walking, picnicking and relaxing. With stunning views over the Moray Firth towards Cromarty, it is a hub for wildlife and you may even spot dolphins leaping in the fifth. The town also has two championship golf courses at Nairn Golf Club and Nairn Dunbar Golf Links.

Fortrose is a town on the coast, overlooking the Moray Firth. It’s known for its ruined 13th-century sandstone church, Fortrose Cathedral, which is free to visit. The town is near to Chanonry Point, a famous spot for watching bottlenose dolphins in the firth. It also has a wonderful championship golf course at Fortrose and Rosemarkie Golf Club, the 15th oldest recorded golf club in the world!
